To promote this year’s World Health Day in the spirit of its slogan Health for All, an event was hosted at the Avicenna Tajik Medical State University (TSMU). Talks and presentations were given by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC’s) which is also celebrating 20 years of support to the health sector in Tajikistan. There were information stands where visitors and medical students could ask questions and receive information. Clinical skills equipment and training materials which have been donated to TSMU to complement its own investments were also on display.

The event was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the central role of Family Medicine in improving the provision of personal, comprehensive and continuing health care for the population. It was also a chance to celebrate the progress being made in Primary Health Care in Tajikistan and the contributions of family doctors through SDC’s support and the implementation efforts of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.

The guests included top level representatives of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, TSMU, SDC, the Post Graduate Medical Institute, Association of Family Medicine, Republican Training and Clinical Center of Family Medicine, as well as the Republican Healthy Life Style Center, Medical College of Dushanbe, OXFAM, Aga Khan Health Service, and the NGOs SiDa and Bovari ba Fardo amongst others. Furthermore, there were large groups of interested medical and nursing students – the future of Family Medicine in the country.

In particular, SDC’s Medical Education Reform Project was involved in the preparation of the event, in collaboration with TSMU, and provided the information stands with brochures and leaflets.
