The word cafe provided the participants with the opportunity to explore further certain aspects in regard to social entrepreneurship or social business in smaller groups. At the end of this exchange, each table presented their main points of discussion. There was much to be discussed! Here below you find just a few of the highlights:

  • DSC01899A good social entrepreneur must be able to navigate in uncertain waters and get things done in environments of informal economies. Finding, working and relying on the right people is key!
  • There is a multitude of financial instruments an social entrepreneur can use. Which ones to chose? – Of course the needs for specific financial instruments change as the social enterprise evolves.
  • The question of monetizing many aspects of the value chain is crucial when you start thinking about up-scaling your social enterprise! This is easier said than done. The place to start is certainly at the individual farm level. Nevertheless it stays to be a complex undertaking.
  • Why the name “social entrepreneurs”? Can the idea of making money really be social? Is it enough to focus on vulnerable and low-income people to call yourself a social entrepreneur?
  • Public private partnerships definitely are beneficial to social entrepreneurs. Government’s involvement ensures certain capital investment, professional know-how facilitating the project’s sustainability. – On the other hand, social entrepreneurs are valuable partners to governments. Apart their full dedication to the project, social entrepreneurs know their local networks and enjoy the trust of the community.

  • You need to invest into leaders. These people will then take your social business approach further.
  • Don’t underestimate the cultural context. Learn the rules and context in order to act in the community.
  • Invest in new technologies. Mobile phones and communicating through video can be used and are understood by people that didn’t go to school.
  • Learn how to communicate with your customers. Storytelling is a powerful tool.
  • Boost self-esteem of your producers.​
