An estimated 50 million children are on the move in the world today, both within and between countries, with or without their parents. The conditions under which movement takes place are often dangerous, putting migrant children, especially unaccompanied and separated children at an increased risk of economic or sexual exploitation, abuse, neglect and violence. Migrants and forcibly displaced persons are often excluded from national education and healthcare systems. Laws and policies are failing migrants by negating their right to education and health, ignoring their special needs. In addition, millions more have been affected in other ways by migration because for example they were left behind while their parents left for professional reasons.
Policy and programmatic responses to protect and support these children are often fragmented and inconsistent. Migrant children, especially those in the context of labour migration are still largely invisible in debates on both child protection, education and migration. For these reasons, SDC created a dedicated Workstream commissioning studies in Sri Lanka and West Africa (tbc) on the topic looking into the possibility of strengthening policy and operational responses.
