SDC is applying Aggregated Reference Indicators (ARIs) and Thematic Reference Indicators (TRIs) to better report and communicate overall results and against Switzerland's International Cooperation Strategies (2017-2021; 2021-2024).
The updated list of ARIs and TRIs proposes a menu of indicators based on SDC thematic approaches. They reflect good international practice and SDC's experience. SDC operational units should select at least 50% of health indicators from that list.
When preparing a project, cooperation or global programme, do review the list carefully, taking into consideration each sub-objective of the Dispatch, theme or SDG target which is either included or touches upon the results aimed at. It is important to examine the whole list as several ARIs and TRIs address transversal themes or are linked more than one sub-objective of the Dispatch or more than one SDG target. ARIs and TRIs are to be included in all result frameworks coming into effect and should be selected if they are relevant and make sense in the concerned situation. All ARIs/TRIs are therefore listed here.
For health specific interventions, the following 2 ARIS and 5 TRIs are reference indicators. For more details have a look at the factsheet (concrete guidance and definition):
ARIs | Indicator | Measuring unit | Link to the factsheet |
| Safe birth delivery | Number of births attended by skilled health personnel | HLT_ARI_1.pdf (admin.ch) |
| Prevention of non-communicable diseases | Number of persons reached through health education sessions related to the prevention of non-communicable diseases | HLT_ARI_2.pdf (admin.ch) |
TRIs | Maternal mortality | a) Number of maternal deaths b) Number of live births | HLT_TRI_1.pdf (admin.ch) |
| Out-of-pocket payment for health services and care | a) Out-of-pocket expenditure on health per capita b) Domestic general government health expenditure per capita | HLT_TRI_2.pdf (admin.ch) |
| Patients satisfaction | a) Number of patients fully satisfied with health services provided at the health facility b) Total number of patients surveyed | HLT_TRI_3.pdf (admin.ch) |
| Access to modern methods of family planning | a) Number of women who received information and have their need satisfied with modern family planning methods b) Total number of women surveyed of reproductive age (15-45 years) | HLT_TRI_4.pdf (admin.ch) |
| Malnutrition among children under 5 years old | Number of children aged <5 years stunted for age | HLT_TRI_5.pdf (admin.ch) |
Your specific health intervention might not be captured by 2 ARIs and 5 TRIs reference indicators. In that case, an extensive list of 87 health indicators developed by the SDC Health Network is at your disposal.
Moreover, you are invited to consider indicators under other thematic priorities.
Here below are some examples:
Healthy diets (Agriculture and Food Security)
Local community involvement in water and sanitation management (Water)
Improved awareness and capacities on climate change (Climate change)
Women's Economic Empowerment (Inclusive economic development)
Reconstruction and rehabilitation support (Disaster Risk Reduction)
Social Protection (poverty)
Sexual and Gender Based Violence (Gender)
Social behavior change in favor of gender equality (Gender)
