Andean Forest

Andean forest ecosystems have important ecological functions. They store and purify water, for example, and protect people from destructive natural events. At present, Andean forests cover an area of over 35 million hectares. But their survival is threatened  – up to 20% of them disappear every year. Until very recently, climate specialists mainly focused their attention on the tropical lowland rainforest countries. With the ANFOR regional project, the SDC wants to promote the exchange among Andean countries of proven strategies for the protection of mountain forest ecosystems. More information
