SDC A&FS Network: Programme Portfolio

SDC A+FS Programme Portfolio

From 2012 to 2014 SDC's total expenditures on Agriculture and Food Security (A+FS) have increased to CHF 300 million. This amount includes bilateral projects as well as multilateral contributions (for example to IFAD and the CGIAR) and disbursements to Swiss NGOs.

In 2014 Sub-Sahara Africa accounted for the largest share with 39% of total investments. The increase from 2013 to 2014 is due to higher expenditures for "Emergency Food Aid", "Agricultural Production", "Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture" and a higher disbursement for the African Development Bank.

In 2014 disbursements for "Emergency Food Aid" increased due to activities in West and East Africa, Syrian Arab Republic, Lebanon and Ukraine, and disbursements for "Agricultural Production" were also higher mainly because of new initiatives to increase productivity of smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Nutrition is back on the development agenda. The SDC's investment in nutrition amounted to around CHF 50 million in 2014. Roughly half of this amount was accounted for by "Emergency Food Aid". Other areas of intervention were "Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture", "Agricultural Production and Natural Resources" and "Primary Health Care".
