Migration is not Gender Neutral

26.08.17 / Claudia Paixão, Advisor Migration and Development, HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation, Zurich

Migration is not gender neutral. Women and men move for a combination of reasons and they face different challenges, opportunities and have different and intersecting vulnerabilities. On the one hand gender influences who migrates and why, and how decisions are made throughout the migration cycle. On the other hand, migration influences gender relations, power and behaviour either imbedding inequalities and traditional roles or challenging and changing them. This guidance sheet outlines key gender issues regarding migration and how these can be integrated in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of cooperation strategies and project interventions.
