Learning Journey on Urban, Peri-Urban Development Dynamics - online discussion on urban-rural linkages

The Global Programme on Migration and Development is a partner in the SDC Learning Journey on "Urban, Peri-Urban Development Dynamics". In this context, the network on agriculture and food security has launched an online discussion on urban-rural linkages and their implications for international cooperation in the 2030 era.

Migration is key in understanding urban-rural linkages or rather the functioning of territorial systems around cities, considering that migrants link different territories through multiple connections and value chains, such as financial transfers, know-how exchange, business relations and social networks.

We would therefore like to encourage the SDC Migration Network community to contribute to the ongoing online discussion by bringing in reflections about how the urban-rural linkages fostered by migrants can be leveraged for sustainable development.

The online discussion focuses on the following key questions:

  • How can we better respond to people's needs in the context of urban-rural linkages?
  • Should we try to overcome the concept of opposing rural to urban as it might perpetuate considering development exclusively in spatial and binary ways?
  • Do you see scope for leverage to more inclusively reach men, women and children in peri-urban areas with our work?

We look forward to your active participation and a lively debate!
