Morocco’s migration policy and links with West Africa

Morocco’s migration policy and links with West Africa

July 2015

Professor Mohamed Berriane, Mohammed V University– Rabat, Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology

During the SDC regional workshop on Migration and Development held in Ouidah in Benin in June 2015, discussions highlighted that the majority of migration in West Africa takes place within the region. Nevertheless, large numbers of people move every year towards Northern Africa, some to settle, others to move to Europe or the Middle East. Professor Berriane from Morocco shared his insights on migration patterns, on the new migration policy of Morocco and on aspects related to the integration of migrants. During the subsequent discussion, participants identified several issues in need of further analysis including migration patterns between the different regions, working conditions in the informal sector (which employs the majority of sub-Saharan migrants in North Africa), integration challenges and the role of remittances to West Africa.
