Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) has become an umbrella term for any harm that is perpetrated against a person’s will, and that results from power inequalities that are based on gender roles. SGBV is a life-saving issue: it has devastating effects on the health and well-being of the survivors and negatively affects the community as a whole. Globally, SGBV impacts on women and girls disproportionally to men and boys by sheer numbers and negative consequences, but boys and men may be victims of violence too. While SGBV is a regular phenomenon occurring in wars, conflicts, and emergency contexts, domestic and intimate partner violence is the most wide spread form of SGBV, affecting an estimated one in three women worldwide.
