Gender equality is embedded in Switzerland's national and international commitments. For SDC, promoting gender equality is key for achieving sustainable development, inclusive economic development and ending poverty. Supporting gender equitable development is both, a matter of women's human rights and an economic necessity.
Gender mainstreaming
The SDC Gender Policy defines gender mainstreaming as the main instrument to implement the policy. Gender mainstreaming means that any proposed action is reviewed with respect to its implications for women and men. It aims at promoting gender equality in all different fields such as health, education, employment and income, to name some.
The gender mainstreaming approach is threefold and integrates gender as a cross-cutting theme into all SDC projects and programme, supports targeted gender-specific interventions and takes measures in favour of institutional change.
To facilitate capacity building and skills development in gender issues and gender mainstreaming, SDC provides a set of tools and instruments.
The Convention On The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) And Its Relevance for SDC (2017)
This Fact Sheet highlights the importance of CEDAW for SDC´s work on gender equality and for its human rights-based approach toward poverty reduction. It identifies concrete entry points for supporting the implementation of CEDAW obligations in SDC’s partner countries.
