Types of Activity

DRR types of activities (targeted activities)

Guidance and illustrations on DRR types of activities

This section aims to illustrate examples of DRR types of activities. These are often also referred to as targeted DRR activties, with the main objective to reduce the risks of a slow or sudden onset disaster to happen (e.g. drought, flash flood).
Targeted DRR interventions...

  • ...should be based on a systematic risk assessment

  • ...refer to the implementation and promotion of a selected set of DRR measures

Structure of this section's sub-pages, i.e. DRR types of activities

An overview of  DRR types of activities is given in this section and related sub-pages as illustrated with the coulours of the mind map overview below:

  • Numbers (1-7) refer to a sub-page, which are typical DRR interventions

  • Colors refer to types of activities / topics where further information can be found

Each sub-section i.e. DRR type of activity, contains...

  • a description of the measure under "What it is"

  • simple to sophisticated examples under "What does its cover"

  • links for further information under "Web-resources"

Key considerations to shape DRR types activities

Interventions are based upon the risk concept: All risks and the corresponding hazards, vulnerabilities and coping capacities are assessed and evaluated ('know your risks'). An in-depth overview of all prevailing risks and their complex interconnectedness provides the basis on which to decide which risks to focus on. The SDC focuses its DRR activities on proactive measures (prevention/mitigation, preparedness for better response, risk transfer). In addition, in the aftermath of disasters, the SDC contributes to 'building back better' in order to prevent future risks and losses.

SDC assists partners – governments, civil society, communities, the private sector and international organisations – in disaster-prone countries in the planning and implementation of targeted DRR activities by means of capacity development and strengthening institutions, organisations and populations.

DRR relies on a combination of measures - structural and non-structural - to reduce existing and prevent news riks. The figure below shows the range of possible DRR measures.
