  Welcome!

Welcome to the Governance Course and thank you for taking the time to understand SDC’s approach to governance             better! We look forward to work with you in the coming weeks. You might remember from the application that we will           have three different parts of the course:

9 – 11 March 2022
Wednesday to Friday 09:00-11:30 CEST
Online training
The interactive online training allows for intensive exchange among peers where you apply the principles and approaches of part 1 to your own programs and for exchanges on problem-based approaches, with specific focus on authoritarian backsliding, climate change, digitalization and systemic corruption.

We are looking forward to this joint process together! All online sessions are available now, we recommend to do them one after the other, they are self-paced and you can choose if you just go for the mandatory reading - these documents are marked with a red exclamation mark >>!<<, or you can invest a little bit more time and get inspired by additional guidances and videos.

The concept for part three, in-person course and online, is peer-centric - we build on the wisdom of the (virtual) “room”. Your reflections, questions and challenges are our starting point (gathered during the Webinar), we build on them and work with them.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in contact with Christa Romagnini [christa.romagnini@eda.admin.ch].

Three online sessions

But lets stop talking “organisational stuff” and get into the topic. As a governance unit, we often hear that governance is complicated and difficult to understand. However, it can’t be so difficult: we all experience governance every day. This video tells the story of Tao who is confronted with different governance challenges while trying to establish his own small business.

But instead of Tao, you could also be Oksana and Aleksander, a Ukrainian couple seeking to register their baby after birth, or Farid, an uncle in a refugee camp that is trying to access clean drinking water for his nieces and nephews. All of these services depend on a series of formal and informal rules and regulations applied by different actors – this process is called governance.

We take you through 3 online inputs with mandatory readings, flavoured with videos and additional links (if you are curious). The three sessions will introduce you to:

Go to session ONE

What is governance? Governance challenges are manifold and can be very broad. So what is SDC’s definition of governance, how do we pin this down? Where do we put our focus and why?

Go to session TWO

How do we decide what to collaborate on with partner countries? How to analyse governance processes and how to understand power structures and actors’ motivation in your context?

Go to session THREE

Which tools will help you to manage a governance program? In particular, how to enable adaptive management, how to dialogue with both donors and partner government and how to monitor and report on governance?

Please note that you need to apply and register in order to receive access to this course. Write your request to Christa Romagnini [christa.romagnini@eda.admin.ch].
