Welcome to the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC thematic network on democratisation, decentralisation and local governance ddlgn.

This site has a double function. First, it is a repository of relevant information for members of the ddlg network working on the above themes. It offers information on concepts, tools, policies, best practices and training opportunities. We hope our news updates and shared documents are of interest to a wider community of experts and readers as well. Second, the site offers a virtual platform for knowledge exchange, joint learning among and peer support for registered network members. The topics covered by the network are divided in four categories:

The two SDC networks Agriculture and Food Security (A+FS) and Democratization, Decentralization and Local Governance (DDLG) are announcing an exciting Learning Journey in Land Governance 2016. We want to generate and share knowledge about burning issues on land governance. Together we will develop evidence based recommendations for SDCs interventions.

The topic of Civic Engagement has figured high on the ddlgn agenda for some years now. Experience capitalization, E-discussions and learning events have helped network members to build a joint understanding of the underlying concepts and theories and to share and reflect on own experiences and practices.

The topic of Fiscal Decentralisation is core to the functioning of local governance and features prominently in SDC programme portfolio on decentralisation and local governance, which mainly includes the promotion of fiscal transfer schemes, generation of own source revenues (e.g. taxation) and on budget support to subnational governments. Consequently DDLGN initiated this learning journey at an early stage (2010) and over the years continued joint learning and peer exchange on concepts, practices and the challenges of underlying politics.
