As part of supporting the primary health care system in Albania, Switzerland responds to the devastating earthquake that hit the country by rehabilitating five damaged health centers

A Swiss humanitarian mission arrived in Albania immediately after the earthquake on 26 November 2019. Together with the Swiss Embassy, it intervened in three lines of action: examining the stability of damaged houses, providing sheltering and related supplies, and establishing a pilot financial support for most affected households.

The earthquake damaged also several health centres in Durrës, Tirana and Krujë that the authorities had to close. Over 45,000 people remained without or with limited primary health care and therefore the Ministry of Health and Social Protection requested support from international donors, specifically approaching the Swiss health programme in the country.

Through a flexible adaptation of its primary health support, the Swiss Embassy decided to provide funding for reconstructing five health centres in both urban and rural areas.

“We have agreed to add over 450,000 Euros for the reconstruction of several health centres in affected areas”, states Ambassador Adrian Maître.
The five health centres in and around Durrës region suffered serious structural damages and will be reconstructed in the framework of the SDC project ‘Health for All’.
Improving primary health care is one of the main objectives of the Swiss Health programme in Albania.
